Love Sports? Work With Athletes

It’s well known that professional athletes receive physiotherapeutic treatment when they’ve injured themselves. But did you know world-class athletes regularly receive massages regardless of injury? Sports and deep tissue massages help their muscles stay supple and strong, regardless of whether they’re recovering from any physical trauma to their body.

From rugby players to long-distance runners, licensed massage therapists tend to athletes in almost every competitive sport. Because massage stimulates blood flow, it helps send more oxygen (which is carried by the blood) to the area that’s being worked on. The human body requires oxygen to perform all its functions — including just moving. So, because of the muscles receiving greater levels of oxygen, they can work harder when the athlete is training.

Massage also helps circulate lymph fluid. This liquid contains white blood cells produced by the bone marrow. These cells are a crucial component of the immune system. Massage encourages lymphatic fluid to travel to localized areas, which is particularly helpful when a sportsperson accidentally sustains an injury, either while training or competing (such as in contact sports). In that case, the massage therapist gently massages the affected area to help it heal.
